The Beauty of Mixed Media

Art doesn’t have to stay inside the lines — or even inside one medium. Mixed media is all about freedom, layering, and surprise. Every piece becomes a story told through textures, colors, and unexpected materials.

At its core, mixed media is simply combining different materials in one artwork: paint and collage, ink and fabric, found objects, resin, and more. It’s art without limits — a way to break rules and create depth and dimension that paint alone can’t achieve.

I’m especially drawn to mixed media because of the texture and depth it brings. Foil and metallics, for example, catch the light and draw the eye around the image. Everyday objects like seashells, buttons, rocks, broken glass, and sand turn into unexpected treasures, inviting the viewer to lean in and discover what’s hidden on the surface of the canvas.

Mixed media reminds us that beauty often comes from contrast — rough and smooth, bright and dark, chaos and structure. That’s why I love it: it reflects life itself.

Next time you’re looking at a piece of mixed media art, take a moment to notice how different layers tell different parts of the story. You might be surprised by what you find.
