Vintage Taiwanese Stacked Lacquerware Boxes 8” x 8” x 6”

Lacquerware has a rich history, with its origins tracing back thousands of years to East Asia, particularly China and Japan. The technique involves applying multiple layers of lacquer, a natural resin derived from trees, to create a durable, lustrous, and often highly decorative surface. In Japan, the art of maki-e, which involves sprinkling gold or silver powder onto wet lacquer to create intricate designs, reached its zenith during the Heian period and remains a highly esteemed craft.

Taiwan, under the "R.O.C." (Republic of China) designation, also developed its own distinct lacquerware traditions, often influenced by Chinese and Japanese styles but incorporating local aesthetics and materials. These decorative boxes were commonly used for storing jewelry, stationery, or other small personal items, serving both functional and ornamental purposes. Vintage pieces from Taiwan often showcase vibrant colors and detailed floral or scenic motifs, reflecting a blend of cultural influences.

Original sticker on bottom “Interpur R.O.C.” is metallic silver.
